What was I thinking: Whispers In The Shadow videos 2018

(Für die deutsche Version "Was ich mir dabei gedacht habe: Whispers In The Shadow Videos 2018" bitte nach unten scrollen!)

My work for and with Whispers In The Shadow starts in 2007. Back then I’m working for a Viennese TV station and want to experiment more towards music videos. The band has no objections that I use their music. However, the first video for the song Killing Time turns out to be so bad that we never even dare to release it, only a few people know of its existence.

Half a year later I interview the guys for the 35-minute-long bonus-feature and my colleagues and I film a live concert in Vienna, both is featured on the bonus-dvd for the album Into The Arms Of Chaos. In 2010 the first official music video Blood, Sweat & Tears follows. A year later we shoot The Rites Of Passage clip and release it in 2012.

The following years I make music videos for The Devil & The Universe (the other band of WITS-singer Ashley). Visually it becomes silent around Whispers In The Shadow, until…

The Urgency Of Now

The same-titled album is currently in the making, when Ashley gives me the first demos and asks me to make a video. During the third or fourth run-through the idea for The Urgency Of Now comes to my mind. One word attracts me: “Attention!” While I check mails on my smartphone, dust the bookshelf and listen to the songs all at the same time I ask myself: what is distracting my attention? Advertisement! I think of all the annoying disturbances online: flashy popup-windows, losing the internet connection and the jamming because of it, subscribe buttons and so forth. My plan is to shoot a simple performance video, afterwards destroy it and with it the attention of the audience. In the end the video should be too annoying to watch. The band agrees with the idea. A few weeks later Ashley writes Detractors and tells me, that this should be the single.

Detractors

Again and again I listen to the song and again and again I switch through the channels of my mental TV, looking for a suitable video idea. I can’t find one! That’s my normal approach: I wait for the pictures forming in my mind, then swipe them away until I find pictures I’m satisfied with and also can actually realize (so many good mental videos never came to be because of doability). It’s the first time, neither my normal approach nor alcohol are efficient to get an idea for Detractors. Once more a line of the song stands out and I approach it rationally: “No one controls the controls.” For me it’s a rejection of conspiracy theories and I ask myself how can I depict that? What is control? How does control show, visually? I end up at symmetry as a way to exercise control. Mankind, who interferes in unsymmetrical nature like imitating a wild river with a straight canal, or clear forest land in a rectangular shape to put a rectangular house on there that is surrounded by a rectangular fence. The band as the unsymmetrical opposite. I want to film them up close to create a claustrophobic feeling without the possibility of orientation. The step back is missing, you don’t get an overall view. I hope for an urgent feeling, that suites the topic of the album. The CCTV camera is an additional critical element, but in a playful way without the moral pointing finger. So, I pick up my camera to shoot the most symmetrical pictures of my life. While in the city I realize two things. First: Symmetrical pictures are unbelievable boring. There is a reason why one doesn’t film a chessboard up front for example, but angular to create dynamic. The pictures only become really exciting when something destroys the symmetry, like people crossing or cars driving by. Second: The dichotomy nature = unsymmetrical, human intervention = symmetrical is simply not true at all! The closer I look the more I realize that there is no absolute symmetry. There is always a stain that gets in the way, a grass stalk that pierces through the asphalt and erratically arranged dirt. On the other hand, the closer I look at nature the more I see symmetry for example in the shape of flowers or leaves. But I still hang onto my video idea, because while editing I see how well it works and that it transports exactly the atmosphere that I want. Besides, afterwards I can pretend that the symmetrical background for the band isn’t just a coincidence but picks up the idea of symmetry and connects both story lines.

Because I still dwell on the idea for The Urgency Of Now, I decide to realize that video as well. Nobody is stopping me.

The Urgency Of Now – the video

We shoot for an afternoon at the studio of Lightbox-Academy. Werner Nowak, a photographer who films videos as well, helps me by operating a second camera. While editing I realize it’s not necessary to create a video simply too annoying to watch. The other way round: the more subtle and unfrequently I apply disturbances the more it hurts. I rely on feeling when it comes to cutting and especially the first ad (0:29 min) and the jamming (2:15 min) cause a sting into my heart, a good sign. I know that people could misunderstand the WITS advertisement and take it seriously but I prefer this to fake ads (which was the original plan). At the end of the clip the message should be clear. The video works when you intuitively want to close the ads, wonder about your adblocker or get angry because of the bad quality. The attention is disturbed and maybe you start thinking. Or you just cringe for a second, I’m fine with that. I would prefer if it stings into your heart.

Was ich mir dabei gedacht habe: Whispers In The Shadow Videos 2018

Into The Arms Of Chaos erscheint. 2010 folgt das erste offizielle Musikvideo Blood, Sweat & Tears und ein Jahr später drehen wir The Rites Of Passage, das 2012 veröffentlicht wird.

In den Jahren danach mache ich Musikvideos für The Devil & The Universe (die andere Band von WITS-Sänger Ashley). Um Whispers In The Shadow wird es visuell still, bis…

The Urgency Of Now

Werbung! Ich denke an all die lästigen Online-Störquellen: flashige Popup-Fenster, abreißende Internet-Verbindung inkl. Ladehemmung, Subscribe-Buttons usw.

Was ist Kontrolle?

The Urgency Of Now – das Video
